West Palm Beach is often overshadowed by the opulence of The Island. You may know plush Palm Beach or the buzz of Clematis downtown, but have you ever experienced West Palm like a local? Our little city can be misconstrued as uppity, but it is an up and coming haven for hipsters. This is your guide to the unconventional side of WPB through its neighborhoods and the Warehouse District.
Shop at Bohemian Groove on the Move
The Palm Beacher may be polished and preppy, but the typical West Palmer is breezy and Bohemian. If you prefer fringe and tassels over monograms, you will love this darling boutique on wheels. The owner, Brittany Reilly, started her career in fashion styling high profile customers as a personal shopper in Manhattan. After 5 years, she shocked her parents leaving her prosperous job in the Big City to be an entrepreneurial vagabond. She refurbished a vintage airstream, stocked it with luxury Boho apparel and hit the East Coast popping up at festivals from New York to Florida. Brittany rolls out the tiger carpet to guests, complete with floor pillows and swaying dreamcatchers. Customers are welcome to laugh and lounge in this InstaWorthy atmosphere. If you don’t catch the Bohemian Groove while it is on the move, you can schedule a shopping appointment when it’s parked in WPB or use your husband’s credit card on their website. Be sure to snag a pair of the signature cowrie shell sunny straps along with a flowy maxi dress perfect for Florida summer happy hour.
Chow Down at Grandview Public Market
This food hall is the ultimate solution to the dinner dilemma you share with your significant other. With a range of offerings from Burgers to Boba Tea, Grandview has something to please everyone’s palette. My summer favorite has been Lechon Tropical, offering breakfast, Cuban sandwiches and crepes. Chef Danny is a Grandview success, as he starting slinging delectable crepes on the Grandview Loading Dock on the weekend. His popularity allowed him to have a permanent booth under the name Tropical Crepes. He grew to a full vendor space as Lechon Tropical serving his signature mojo roasted pork, always made with love, of course.
Sip like a Local at Steal Tie Spirits Co. and Steam Horse Brewing Co.
Not many people know that WPB is home to both a distillery and brewery within throwing distance of one another. Steel Tie Spirits is owned by a father and son team, crafting small batch liquors using all-natural ingredients. The “authentic spirit of West Palm” began with Steel Tie’s Black Coral Rum. Its recipe is inspired by a mason jar of homemade rum the family shared over Christmas in 2012. They have a tasting room on site where you can purchase spirits to take home. If you care to savor a Saison instead, walk just across the parking lot to Steam Horse Brewing Co. The 6,000 square foot taproom welcomes locals with plenty of TVs to watch the return of sports. If you seek a classic brew, try the West Palm Lager for a crisp quench to your thirst on hot Florida days.
